An improvised drum solo is the exciting culmination of a traditional Bellydance show. Each high-energy fast-paced and intricate performance is a conversation between dancer and drummer. This video is intended as a tool for both daners and drummers to better understand the structure, components, and partice of this compelling performance art.

Mariyah is a bellydancer, choreographer and instructor. Distinguished by her graceful and evocative dance style, she is highly regarded as a leading dance artist in New York City. The performance of bellydance with live music is one of her primary passions and has been an inspiration throughout her career. As an instructor, Mariyah encourages students to work deeply within the body both physically and energetically to find a uniquely expressive physicality. Mariyah is a theatrical artist drawing on bellydance and a variety of movement forms, and her passion for myth, mysticism and poetry to create dances which evoke archetypal figures and a journey of the spirit. She develops her art through continuing study, travel, her work with respected theatrical and traditional dance ensembles, and new creative dance theater projects and workshop topics.

Dhabit Iqaa Faisal Zedan represents the qualities of an Arabic virtuoso drummer: impeccable technique combined with an inherent understanding of the complexities of Middle Eastern musical structure. Faisal’s repertoire ranges from the classical Muwashahat genre, to folk and belly dance styles. His unique and graceful approach blends thousands of years of tradition with a contemporary touch. Faisal’s main inspiration in drumming is the modern Syrian style that incorporates the subtlety of the mizan(feeling of the rhythm) with the elaborate use of the left hand. Outside of percussion, Faisal’s ambition is to rejuvenate the classical Arabic dance known as the Muwashahat dance.
